When Hayley's mom describes the moment her daughter looked up and said, "I can hear really well!" — you can feel eight years of worry lifting in a single sentence.

For most of Hayley's life, that kind of clarity felt out of reach. Today, she's a thriving eight-year-old. But her family's path to get here is one we hear echoes of every week at The Haven, and it's a story worth telling for every parent in Indian Trail and Union County who feels stuck in the same cycle.

Watch Hayley's story

Hear the McGimsey family share their experience in their own words, then read the full story below.

Eight years of chronic ear infections

Hayley dealt with major ear infections from the time she was born. "For the first six months, we dealt with chronic ear infections and we went through multiple rounds of antibiotics," her mom shared. The family did everything that was asked of them. Hayley had ear tubes placed at a year old, which gave her some reprieve.

But when the tubes came out, one ear decided to be stubborn. Instead of clearing up, the drainage simply moved — now outside the ear instead of inside it. From roughly age one through six and a half, Hayley had chronic drainage about once a month, living in what her mom called "a constant state of muffledness" in that ear.

The family kept showing up. They saw the ENT again and again. "They were just like, 'Well, maybe she'll outgrow it. We can't do any more surgeries or operations. We'll just give her these drops.'" Round after round of antibiotics, drop after drop — and the infections kept coming back.

"There's got to be another way"

Any parent who has lived this knows the exhaustion underneath it. For Hayley's mom, it was also personal: her own uncle had lost hearing in one ear from ear infections. "That was always a fear of mine," she said.

"I was talking to Dan about how we need to find another solution. There's got to be another way; the body has got to be able to heal itself."

That instinct — that the body is designed to adapt and heal when it's supported — is exactly the principle our care is built on.

Finding The Haven

"I just remember Googling solutions, and chiropractic came up," she recalled. "And even better, there is this beautiful little place called The Haven right where we live."

Then came the detail the family still smiles about: their daughter Hayley shares my name, spelled the exact same way. "I don't know if this is just a God thing or a coincidence," her mom laughed. Their attitude was simple and honest: "We've tried everything else, so it can't hurt."

Care that feels like home, not a doctor's office

Like a lot of kids who have lived in and out of medical offices, Hayley carried some anxiety around doctors. That changed on day one in our practice.

"From day one, Hayley was just so welcoming," her mom said.

"I tell people all the time that if they have kids that are nervous about the doctor — it doesn't feel like a doctor's office. It feels truly like a home."

This is intentional. We built The Haven to be a warm, calm, welcoming space precisely because a child who feels safe is a child whose nervous system can settle — and a regulated nervous system is where good things start to happen.

What changed for Hayley

"We went from having frequent ear infections once a month doing the drops, to none, for the most part," her mom said.

What moved this family most was being able to see it. After Hayley's final round of care, a follow-up scan showed what her body had been doing over those months. "It felt like two seconds of an appointment and the rest was just joy," her mom said. "We never felt pushed into anything, and Dr. Hayley was always very big on listening to our daughter and how she felt comfortable with everything."

For Hayley's dad, Dan, the objective progress made all the difference. "It's nice that you can see the physical improvement," he said. "With the tests and the scans, and coming regularly for the adjustments, you can see the improvement over time. Whereas if you have the constant antibiotics — and we went through all the big brands, all the different ones, and nothing seemed to work — you just kind of use the antibiotics and hope it works. But here, you could see the improvement."

His conclusion is the line that gives this story its name:

"We figured out pretty quickly that what ultimately was our 'throw our hands up in the air, last resort' kind of moment should have been our first choice."

Understanding chronic ear infections in children

Ear infections are one of the most common reasons young children end up in a doctor's office, and recurring infections can be genuinely disruptive — often affecting hearing, sleep, balance, speech development, and mood. The conventional path of repeated antibiotics and ear tubes helps many children, but as Hayley's family experienced, it doesn't always resolve the underlying root cause.

That's because recurrent ear issues are often less about the ear itself and more about drainage and regulation. The small muscles and tissues that allow the middle ear to drain are influenced by the nervous system, especially the nerves that travel through the upper neck region and sinuses. When that system is stressed or not communicating well, fluid can sit, stagnate, and become a recurring problem.

How neurologically focused pediatric chiropractic fits in

To be clear: chiropractic care does not treat, cure, or diagnose ear infections, and it is not a replacement for your pediatrician or ENT.

What we do at The Haven is different. Neurologically focused pediatric chiropractic uses gentle, specific, age-appropriate care to reduce tension on the nervous system and improve how the body self-regulates and adapts. When the nervous system can do its job, the body is often far better at draining, calming inflammation, and maintaining its own balance. It helps to fix the "plumbing issue" of poor drainage. We use scans and objective testing — the same kind that showed Hayley's family real, measurable change — so you're never guessing about what's happening.

In other words, we don't chase symptoms. We support the system that runs everything, and we let the body do what it was beautifully designed to do.

Frequently asked questions

Can a chiropractor help my child's chronic ear infections? Pediatric chiropractic does not treat or cure ear infections. It focuses on supporting the nervous system and the body's natural ability to drain, regulate, and adapt. Many families, like the McGimseys, choose it as part of a root-cause approach to their child's overall health. Individual results vary.

Is pediatric chiropractic safe and gentle for kids? Yes — we use gentle, specific, age-appropriate techniques designed for growing bodies, delivered in a calm, welcoming environment built to help anxious children feel at ease.

Do you use any objective testing? We do. We use scans so families can see measurable change over time rather than just hoping something is working.

Should I stop seeing my pediatrician or ENT? No. Our care is designed to work alongside your child's medical team, not replace it. Always keep your pediatrician and specialists involved in your child's care.
