If you're trying to conceive — whether you're just getting started or you've been on this journey for a while — optimizing your nervous system might be the missing piece nobody has talked to you about yet.

As a chiropractor who specializes in the nervous system, I see a lot of people come into The Haven looking to get their nervous system working optimally so they can support their fertility. And the good news is, it's not really a secret anymore: a calm, regulated nervous system creates the foundation your body needs to conceive and carry a healthy pregnancy.

Here's what that actually means, and what you can do about it.

What Does Your Nervous System Have to Do with Getting Pregnant?

Let's break this down simply.

You have a part of your brain called your fight-or-flight response — that's your sympathetic nervous system. It's a God-given ability that kicks in when there's a real threat: running from danger, fighting for your life, something truly dramatic. When it activates, your heart rate goes up, blood rushes to your limbs, your vision sharpens. It's designed to keep you alive.

The problem? Fight-or-flight is amazing when you actually need it — but it was never meant to be your permanent address. And a lot of us are living there.

In today's world, deadlines, schedules, traffic, anxiety, and worry can all keep your brain locked in that stress state. Your nervous system can't always tell the difference between running from a bear in the woods and being late to work because you hit traffic. Both can trigger the same survival response.

Here's where fertility comes in: your brain will not prioritize making a baby when it thinks you're just trying to survive.

Think of it this way — your body might be saying "let's make a baby, let's do this!" but your brain is responding "we are just trying to survive — you want to bring someone else into this? No." And it shuts it down.

This isn't just about difficulty getting pregnant. It can also be a reason for difficulty staying pregnant.

The Goal: Getting Out of Fight-or-Flight and Into "Rest and Digest"

The opposite of fight-or-flight is what we call rest and digest — your parasympathetic nervous system. When you're living in that state, you sleep better, your hormones regulate more easily, digestion improves, and — importantly — fertility has a much easier time doing what it's designed to do.

One of my favorite things about the chiropractic adjustment, especially from a nervous system standpoint, is its ability to hit the brake pedals — to help shift your brain and body out of chronic stress and into a state of ease and safety.

Because here's the key: sometimes we have stress that we don't even consciously feel. Our brain can be perceiving a threat that our external reality doesn't reflect. The adjustment helps the brain perceive safety. And when the brain perceives safety, conception becomes a lot easier.

Nervous system optimization is a really hot topic right now — and fertility goes right along with it.

Supplements I Recommend When You're Trying to Conceive

In addition to chiropractic care, here are the supplements I personally recommend to patients who are in the preconception phase:

1. Vitamin D3 (with Magnesium and K2)

Vitamin D3 is critically important — for both partners. It supports improved maternal outcomes and is also important for sperm quality, so get your partner on it too. The key is to make sure your supplement combines D3 with magnesium and K2 for best absorption and effectiveness. Look for a formula that includes all three together.

2. Beef Liver Supplements

I know — this one sounds a little funky. But in five years of practice, I've noticed that moms in the preconception phase who take a high-quality beef liver supplement tend to have little to no morning sickness. Here's why: organ-sourced nutrients are highly bioavailable — your body recognizes and absorbs them efficiently because they're coming from a whole food source that nourishes your organs directly. It's that "like treats like" principle.

The brand I recommend is Perfect Supplements — I'll have a link in the video description with a discount code. One note: start slow. Taking too much too fast can cause constipation, so ease into it.

3. Hemp Flower Extract (Broad Spectrum)

This is one of my favorites for nervous system regulation. A broad-spectrum hemp flower extract — which contains no THC — supports a calm, balanced nervous system, helps bring the body out of stress and into ease, and promotes hormonal and nervous system balance.

The brand I trust is Green Compass — their products are USDA organic and safe to take while trying to conceive, during pregnancy, and while nursing. Always run any supplement by your OB, midwife, or healthcare provider first, but I've had many patients bring these to their providers and get the green light.

Here's what I love about the daily hemp extract: my patients aren't getting adjusted every single day, but they can take their oil or gummy every day — and it creates a very similar calming effect on the brain and body that a chiropractic adjustment does. It's a great way to extend the benefits of care between visits.

4. FullWell Prenatal Multivitamin

For a comprehensive prenatal that covers all your bases, I recommend FullWell Fertility — formulated by a registered dietitian who specializes in fertility nutrition. Most prenatal vitamins cut corners on key nutrients, but FullWell includes 26 evidence-based vitamins and minerals in bioavailable forms your body can actually absorb and use, including the folate, choline, Vitamin D3, Magnesium Glycinate, K2, B12, and iodine that matter most for preconception health.

A few things I love about it that align with what we talk about at The Haven:

  • Choline — directly supports placental function and fetal brain development, connecting right back to why sperm and egg quality matter so much for a healthy placenta

  • 4,000 IU Vitamin D3 — already covered in my D3 recommendation above, and FullWell builds it right in

  • 300mg Magnesium Glycinate — the most gentle, absorbable form, important for nervous system regulation and sleep (both of which support fertility)

  • Bioavailable folate — not folic acid, but the active form your body can actually use regardless of your genetics

  • Iron-free formula — because iron needs vary by person, and FullWell lets you supplement separately based on your lab work rather than guessing

And since we always say fertility is a team effort — FullWell also makes a men's prenatal multivitamin specifically designed to support sperm health, protect sperm DNA, and optimize male fertility. Getting both partners on the right prenatal is one of the most impactful things you can do before you start trying.

As always, run your supplement plan by your healthcare provider — but FullWell is one I feel confident recommending to patients at The Haven.

Get Your Partner Involved — This Is 50/50

This might be the most important thing I say in this entire post: a baby is 50% mom and 50% dad. Both of you need to be in on this.

It's not just important for the woman to have a healthy nervous system, good nutrition, good sleep, and good supplementation. It matters equally for the male partner.

And here's the science that really drives this home: recent research has shown that when the sperm and egg come together, the placenta begins to form — and the health of that placenta is directly influenced by the health of the sperm.

As a woman, I can't just create my own placenta in isolation. The sperm's involvement in creating the placenta matters. And what we're finding is:

  • Healthier sperm → healthier placenta → healthier pregnancy

  • Less healthy sperm → less healthy placenta → more pregnancy struggles (more morning sickness, fatigue, food aversions, and so on)

So for the guys: work on cutting out alcohol and recreational drugs, clean up your diet, build a consistent workout routine, prioritize sleep, and get on a good supplement plan. Work out together. Drink good water together. Optimize together. Everything you do to support a healthy nervous system and healthy lifestyle will improve the quality of the pregnancy.

Putting It All Together

Here's the simple framework I share with patients at The Haven:

  1. Get your nervous system assessed — find out if you're stuck in fight-or-flight without knowing it

  2. Start regular neurologically-based chiropractic care — to help your brain perceive safety and shift into rest-and-digest

  3. Add quality supplements — D3/Magnesium/K2, beef liver, hemp flower extract

  4. Get your partner on board — this is a team effort, and the research backs that up

  5. Give it time — the nervous system recalibrates over weeks and months, not overnight

While large-scale clinical trials specifically on chiropractic and fertility are still developing, the research supporting the link between nervous system regulation, stress, hormonal balance, and reproductive health is well-established. Research from Yale School of Medicine confirms that chronic HPA axis (stress) activation directly suppresses reproductive function. A 2025 review found that elevated cortisol from chronic stress inhibits the hormones required for ovulation. And a peer-reviewed systematic review in BMC Public Health (2023) confirmed that paternal health — including stress and lifestyle — significantly influences pregnancy success and offspring health.

What to Expect at The Haven

At The Haven, we start every new patient with a comprehensive nervous system assessment — a thorough history and neurological scans that show us exactly where your body is holding stress and where communication between the brain and body is being interrupted.

From there, we create a personalized care plan focused on:

  • Calming the nervous system and shifting out of chronic fight-or-flight

  • Supporting hormonal balance and reproductive health

  • Pelvic alignment using the Webster Technique

  • Building a whole-family wellness foundation before, during, and after pregnancy

We serve families across Indian Trail, Matthews, Monroe, and the Greater Charlotte area. Whether you're just starting to think about getting pregnant or you've been trying for a while, we'd love to support your journey.

Frequently Asked Questions: Chiropractic Care and Fertility

Q: Can chiropractic care help me get pregnant? A: Chiropractic care doesn't directly "treat" infertility, but by helping your brain perceive safety and shifting your nervous system out of chronic fight-or-flight, it supports the conditions your body needs to conceive. Many patients have experienced positive outcomes after beginning neurologically-based care.

Q: What if I don't feel stressed — can I still be in fight-or-flight? A: Yes — this is one of the most important things to understand. Your brain can be perceiving stress that your external reality doesn't reflect. You can feel relatively calm on the surface while your nervous system is still locked in a stress state. That's exactly why we do objective neurological scans at The Haven — so we can see what's actually happening in your nervous system, not just how you feel.

Q: How soon before trying to conceive should I start chiropractic care? A: Ideally, starting 3–6 months before trying to conceive gives your nervous system time to recalibrate. That said, it's never too late — many patients begin care while actively trying to conceive and still see meaningful changes.

Q: Is chiropractic care safe while undergoing IVF or other fertility treatments? A: Yes. Chiropractic care is gentle and non-invasive and can complement fertility treatments. Always inform both your reproductive specialist and your chiropractor about all ongoing treatments.

Q: Do you work with male partners too? A: Absolutely. Since sperm health directly influences placenta health and pregnancy outcomes, we encourage both partners to pursue nervous system care and optimization. We offer whole-family care at The Haven.

Q: Does The Haven accept new patients trying to conceive? A: Yes! We welcome individuals and couples at any point in their fertility journey. Schedule your first visit at havenchiroclt.com or call us at 704.893.5001.
