UNDERSTANDING

Breech & Baby Positioning

Finding out your baby is breech, transverse, or “sunny side up” as your due date nears can bring a wave of worry. First, a breath: your body and your baby are not doing anything wrong. “Breech” simply means your baby is positioned bottom or feet down rather than head down. Babies settle into all sorts of positions, and a lot of it comes down to how much room they have to move.

Your uterus is held in place by muscles and ligaments, and your pelvis is the foundation underneath it all. As pregnancy changes your posture and your center of gravity shifts, tension and imbalance can build through the pelvis, often quietly. When the pelvis is tight or uneven, it can reduce the space your baby has to settle head down on their own.

Signs you might notice

a lot of pressure under the ribs

a provider noting breech or transverse position at a checkup

baby feeling stuck high or to one side

pelvic tightness or unevenness

Can chiropractic help?

Your nervous system coordinates the tone of the muscles and ligaments around your uterus and pelvis. When those tissues are balanced and relaxed, your baby tends to have the most freedom to move.

The Webster Technique is a specific, gentle chiropractic analysis and adjustment for pregnancy that supports balance and ease through the sacrum, pelvis, and the round and broad ligaments. It's low-force and comfortable, with pregnancy pillows so you can fully relax. To be clear about what this is and isn't: we never turn, push on, or manipulate your baby. We support your body, so your baby has room to find their own best position.

Along with the goal of better pelvic balance, many moms tell us their pelvic pressure and discomfort ease, and that they feel more comfortable in the final weeks. The Haven was built on advanced ICPA training, including the Webster Technique and Perinatal certification.

What the research says

“I started seeing Hayley around 32 weeks gestation after having concerns about my baby being breech. I went for weekly visits until I delivered at 41 weeks. As a first time mom, I only labored for 10 hours and pushed for 20 minutes. Not only did I find pain relief from my visits while pregnant, I fully believe it helped prepare my body for labor and birth! My little one has seen Hayley since she was 5 days old. She was tense from delivery and would only turn her head one direction. After her first visit, that was fixed and each time I can tell she feels so much better and is able to relax more. Taking her as part of a wellness routine has really made a difference in her health! Hayley is awesome as a professional and as a person. I can’t recommend prenatal and pediatric chiropractic care enough!”

Common questions

How does the Webster Technique support a breech or transverse baby?

The Webster Technique is a gentle, specific adjustment that supports balance through your pelvis, sacrum, and the ligaments that support your uterus. We don't turn or push on your baby. We support your body's own comfort and balance by removing tension in the areas surrounding the uterus. This opens up the space you already have in your own anatomy, so your baby has room to move and settle into a head-down position on their own. Many moms also notice more ease and less rib & pelvic tension along the way.

Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?

Yes. Prenatal care at The Haven is gentle and low-force, with pregnancy pillows and supportive tables that cradle your changing body, and adjustments tailored to each trimester. Our prenatal care is grounded in advanced ICPA training, including the Webster Technique and Perinatal certification.

When should I come in if my baby is breech?

Many moms begin the Webster Technique for positioning purposes around 30 to 34 weeks, though it's gentle and welcome at any point in pregnancy. Earlier is wonderful too, since supporting pelvic balance throughout pregnancy gives your baby room to settle into a vertex position. Wherever you are, we'll meet you there.

How many visits might I need?

For baby positioning, we recommend twice-a-week adjustments until the baby flips and once-a-week adjustments until delivery. We'll always talk through what we're noticing and what feels right for your body and your timeline.

What is the difference in the Webster Technique if the baby is breech?

Since this is not a technique designed to flip a breech baby, there is no difference in adjusting a pregnant mama with a breech baby and adjusting a mama with a vertex baby. It is important to note that participating in the Webster Technique doesn't guarantee the baby will flip. We simply give the body the tools it often needs to support a head down position and give the baby the optimal environment to flip on their own, if they are going to do so.
